Stylish home decor is now more affordable than ever. When it comes to buying those essential items for your abode, however, what should you scrimp on and what should you invest in?
Investing in key pieces for your home isn’t just about spending big, you know.
Opting for quality finishes, timeless design, and life-changing functionality (even little things like fridge drawers in the right place) make all the difference. Think of it as essentialism for your home.
1. Don’t skimp on the sofa
After a long day’s work or an action-packed weekend, there’s literally nothing better than sinking into a comfortable couch.
A quality sofa will have a hardwood or steel frame that’s built to last, and be upholstered in a durable material.
It might feel like a big investment, but a good-quality sofa will last more than 10 years – which easily justifies the price tag (especially if we’re thinking cost per sit).

2. Fork out for time-saving kitchen essentials
If you love cooking, then you’ll have no problem spending hours in the kitchen (and it won’t feel like ‘slaving over the stove’, as they old saying goes).
If cooking is not your jam, however, invest in a combination food processor/blender and a combination pressure/slow cooker and you’ll have delicious healthy meals ready in minutes (or when you get home).
With these appliances on hand, your food delivery bill won’t be quite so hefty – which means more money for decor!

3. Adorn your floors with a quality rug
Many materials are used in the manufacturing of floor rugs – from natural fibres such as wool, cotton, sisal and hemp to man-made polypropylenes and polyester.
While they all have their pros and cons, we’re casting our vote for natural fibre rugs with bonus points being awarded to wool. It’s soft, strong and durable making it a hard-wearing material perfect for floors. Plus, it absorbs moisture and is a natural air filter for your room.
4. Don’t forget the fridge
Fridges are often overlooked when it comes to investing in pieces for the home. But we open and close our fridge doors countless times everyday – so it’s worth forking out for a fridge that suits you and your lifestyle.
Fridge-and-freezer combos with the freezer at the bottom are perfect for people who aren’t often using the freezer section. All the essentials at waist height means you can skip the mini yoga class to get your veggies (or wine) out.

5. Sweet dreams are made of this (good mattresses)
And by ‘this’ we mean a good-quality mattress. Seriously. Sleep has amazing health benefits, and we’re not getting enough of it. But don’t just take our word for it. Trust research.
According to Harvard Medical School: “In the short term, a lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. In the long term, chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality”.
So it’s worth investing in a quality mattress to get a good kip.

6. And also this (luxurious bed linen)
If a quality mattress is the essential starting point for a good night’s sleep, then it’s luxurious bed linen that makes it a great night’s sleep.
Invest in high thread count bedding made from natural fibers like cotton or linen for optimum comfort (and the sweetest of dreams).
And while you’re in the ‘manchester department’, you might want to grab some luxurious towels, too.
7. Step up your storage game
When it comes to Insta-worthy home decor, storage is essential. With everything in its own ‘spot’, your interior style can be both aesthetically pleasing and practical.
Try the IKEA Eket series for a versatile storage option – the modular design offers the flexibility to create the storage solution you need.

8. Elevate your interiors with artwork
Just like floor rugs anchor a room, wall art elevates interiors adding warmth and character – and of course, an expression of your personal style.
We love this colourful A La Mode Studio still bird print from Temple & Webster for a touch of the wild side and a hint of vintage.

9. Light it up
Lighting can make or break a space, so it pays to invest in lighting options. We love statement floor lamps for their functional value as optional lighting as well as their aesthetic value within the overall interior style of the room.
And dual functionality easily justifies the cost, right? Some might even say it means you can double the budget.
10. Top it all off with tech
We’re talking a TV that you’ll love watching (and that doesn’t interfere with your artful interior decor) and a sound system that creates ambiance without looking like the speaker stack at a festival (too much, right?).
Try the Samsung Frame TV, which doubles as wall art.
